مطلوب Part-Time Senior Writer لدى AUB – Nature Conservation Center

The AUB Nature Conservation Center (AUB-NCC) is the leading​ multidisciplinary academic center addressing nature conservation in the MENA region. We leverage the experience and expertise of AUB faculties, research staff, and volunteers to tackle the region’s most pressing environmental challenges.

The Environment Academy is one of the Environmental Stewardship Programs at the American University of Beirut’s Nature Conservation Center (AUB-NCC), it is seeking a part-time writer to spearhead communications, fundraising, and storytelling efforts. Environment Academy is a community-born movement addressing urgent environmental breakdowns (eg. solid waste, forest fires, wastewater) through a collaboration between the local community team and experts from AUB and the diaspora. Place-based knowledge, citizen science, and community leadership and follow-up are at the helm of this movement, which works with about 10-11 communities in each cycle to fully design, fundraise for, and complement an adapted solution. This is an excellent opportunity for a budding writer interested in the intersections between environmental and social activism, research, & development work — or for someone with experience in the environmental, NGO, activism, or development field who would like to focus on and spotlight their strong existing writing and communication skills.

Qualifications:

Background:

• BA or MA in a writing and research-based discipline from the humanities or social sciences (eg. Anthropology, Sociology, English, History, Environmental Humanities…) or ~3 years of demonstrated writing experience (eg. journalism, copywriting, social media communications…)

• Interest or experience in nature & environmental activism and solutions (preferred)

• Basic understanding or interest in the nuances of the mainstream development model in Lebanon versus community-based, grassroots solutions, and the concepts of transformative or systemic actions (preferred)

General Skills:

• Ability to work independently while meeting deadlines

• Ability to research, synthesize, and integrate references to theoretical concepts from academic literature with adequate source citing (eg. environmental justice, place-based attachment, just transformation…)

• Ability to talk with or interview diverse people (eg. local community members, professors, environmental experts) and synthesize their point of view into stories/reports

• Team-oriented

• Good interpersonal skills

• Fluent in English and Arabic

Tasks:

• Preparing content for Environmental Academy website and Environmental Academy cycle II brochure and eventually support in general storytelling on chosen outlets, whether on our website’s blog or in journalism/ academic publication format (to be determined at a further date)
• Update existing Environmental Academy cycle II proposals’ content and submit them as final reports
• Synthesizing the final reports into stories and potentially interviewing, consulting with community members
• Supporting social media communications by writing snappy and engaging captions
• Support in writing reports for ongoing grants
