Background

Amel Association International (Amel) is a Lebanese and non-sectarian NGO created in 1979. Amel works through 32 centers, 6 mobile medical units, 2 mobile education units and 1 protection unit, and for 43 years has supported the poorest regions of Lebanon, from Beirut and its South Suburbs to Mount Lebanon, Bekaa and South Lebanon. Amel offers accessible services for all in the following fields: food security, health, education, protection, child protection, gender-based violence, livelihood, promotion and protection of human rights, rural development.

The Mobile Education Unit was launched in 2017 to offer quality education support to the most vulnerable children living in the informal tented settlements of Khiam. In December 2021, a new phase of the project will start with the implementation of the following outputs:

  • 400 children living in Marjayoun / Khiam have strengthened their learning capacities;
  • 400 children living in Marjayoun / Khiam have access to a safe learning environment;
  • 400 children living in Marjayoun/ Khiam  have widened learning opportunities;
  • 60 children living in the neighborhood of the center have strengthened their learning capacities.

Through the completion of these activities, the project aims to improve the school performance of 400 vulnerable refugee children living in the Marjayoun/ Khiam area. The intended impact is to improve the future prospects of refugee children. Within this project, 400 children will benefit from structured recreational activities. Among them, 100 children will benefit from vocational cycle-based activities.

TASKS

Task #1 – Outreach & Retention activities

Contribute in planning and following-up on the outreach / Report and justify in case of drop-out for education activities (Retention Support / Basic Literacy Numeracy)

  • Update the database / attendance sheet on weekly basis with the support of the Field Officer;
  • To outreach new children (new comers).

Communicate with families regarding the children’s participation in the MEU’s activities and increase retention

  • To visit / to call parents when a child is absent for more than 2 consecutive sessions and to address the issue to ensure regular attendance;
  • To build an action plan with the field officer for MEU’s team members to increase regular attendance;
  • Meet with parents and explain more about the goal and the activities of the project;
  • Share the children’s achievements with their parents in order to increase motivation and build trustful relationship with the community members

Identify 50 parents to form the parents’ committees

  • Share the goal and the main activities of the parents’ committees with a large group of parents;
  • Provide additional information if needed;
  • Identify the most committed parents and clarify the requirements;
  • Follow up on the participation in the activities.

Identify 100 children to participate to vocational cycle based-activities

  • Share the goal and the main activities for the cycles to caregivers & children;
  • Provide additional information if needed;
  • Identify the most committed children and clarify the requirements;
  • Follow up on the participation in the activities

Contribute in the organization the Back-to-School Campaign

  • Participate in the preparation phase with Field officer and coordinators;
  • Conduct Tent to Tent outreach to collect information;
  • Follow up on the school registration and the referral for NFE activities

Identify other protection needs among community members

  • To report on any identified need (weekly report, daily communication) to the field officer and coordinators;
  • To participate in the identification of targeted groups in case of distribution / extra support;
  • To follow up on community members’ satisfactory following the distribution / support provided by the Amel’s team.

Task #2– Cases identification activities

Establish an internal referral pathway between team members

  • Establish a simple internal referral form for all team members;
  • Clarify the process with all team members;
  • Follow up on the implementation of the internal referral pathways.

Observations of activities

  • Observe on a regular basis the MEU’s activity to identify cases in collaboration with the psychologist.

Task #3– Referral activities

Ensure smooth follow up for internal referrals

  • Follow up on cases referred internally by the team members;
  • Provide the team members with necessary information about the case’s follow up.

Ensure smooth external referral pathways

  • Develop Amel’s network in the area to increase opportunities for external referrals;
  • Contribute to create a local mapping of the service providers in the area in collaboration with Head of Center, Field officer and coordinators;
  • Ensure smooth referral process with external actors (provision of information, follow up with beneficiaries, etc.)

Task #4 – Psycho-social counseling

Organize awareness raising activities

  • Create a monthly plan with the MEU team members to provide psychosocial activities;
  • Conduct weekly awareness sessions with children and community members in collaboration with the psychologist according to the monthly plan;
  • Conduct weekly focus group discussions to address specific issues with children and community members according to the monthly plan.

Provide individual support in collaboration with the psychologist

  • Conduct individual session with parents and children to address specific issue;
  • Ensure individual follow up and the completion of the action plan by case.

Task #5 – Coordination & Monitoring and Evaluation

Facilitate the internal coordination

  • MEU team’s level: coordinate with all team members to ensure that the Child Protection Protocol is followed and that the PSS monthly plan is shared and completed;
  • Centers’ level: coordinate with centers’ staff (Health, Protection, etc.) to refer cases / to improve internal practices (experience sharing)

Monitoring & Evaluation

  • Contribute to the data collection in close collaboration with the Field Officer;
  • Submit weekly reports to the Field Officer, Head of Center & coordinators;
  • Submit other narrative reports such as Focus Group Discussion’s results.
