Job Summary:
- The social worker, as an integral part of a multidisciplinary team, asses the psychosocial and social state of patients and families and provides supportive interventions to help them adjust to serious and life-threatening conditions.
- S/he helps ensuring coherence between the different services interacting with the individuals/communities.
- S/he provides to the patients during their stay in Rafic Hariri University Hospital (RHUH) screening including for Mental Health & PsychoSocial Support (MHPSS) and support in admission, discharge and referral procedures
- Performes intervention may include supportive counselling, grief counselling, child advocacy, crisis intervention, patient/ family advocacy
- Supports the senior social worker in the Community resource networking to facilitate support in access for vulnerable groups
Context Specificities:
The Lebanese public healthcare system has been severely impacted by the series of crises that have plagued the country in recent years, including the Syrian refugee crisis, financial and economic crises, COVID-19 pandemic, and Port blast. This has resulted in an increase in health needs for both the refugee and host communities, who have experienced financial hardships and increased violence.
RHUH has become the primary option for many individuals who cannot afford health costs, and there is an increasing shift away from private insurance coverage. The partnership with RHUH aims to ensure secondary and tertiary care for vulnerable populations while maintaining the hospital’s resilience and its capacity to respond to emergencies during these chronic crises.
The main objective of ICRC’s activities in RHUHH is that wounded and sick benefit from inclusive, equitable, culturally appropriate, timely and effective quality emergency and secondary care meeting recognized international standards and adapted to special needs of vulnerable people.
Objectives and Tasks:
ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Screening
- Performs initial screening and evaluation of patient and families for vulnerability in relation to ICRC criteria of admission to RHUH project to assess and review their situation, ER, OPD and ICRC supported departments;
- Assesses continuously patient/user access to services, and suggests adjustments to the senior social worker
- Facilitates, educates and refers relatives of vulnerable patients to understand possibilities of financial coverages through humanitarian actors;
- Collaborates with the social and Health social services division of RHUH for the best interest of the patient.
- Performs on regular base the Self Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ) and recognises patients with underlying mental illness, provides and/ or makes necessary referrals for ICRC MHPSS delegate or to other NGOs
Admission
- Case management for patients if indicated
- Recommends and makes economic decisions about the best course of action for a particular service user;
- Educates patients and families on the roles of health care team members; assisting patients and families in communicating with one another and to members of the health care team
- Attend meeting required for the team (case review, team meeting…)
Discharge
- Coordinates patient discharge and continuity of care planning with respective ICRC and RHUH health care team members;
- Coordinates patient discharge with other humanitarian actors or agencies, if follow-up is needed (shelter, home, supplies…);
- Files patients documents according to procedures and maintains electronic and hard copy filing system;
- Archives the patient’s files in relation to social work;
- Educates patients on available resources to support post discharge;
Referrals
- Liaises with and make referrals to other humanitarian actors or agencies;
- Liaises with other departments if needed Ecosec, Protection in cooperation with the senior social worker to discuss the social plan with the senior social worker of ICRC for validation
Coordination
- Keeps regular contact with community representatives and relevant organizations.
- Contributes regular on updates within the social services network and stakeholders
- Contributes to the adjustment of patients’ evaluation form for assessment of vulnerability;
- Formulates monthly reports on admissions, referrals, incidents and concerns;
- Performs administrative and office activities for the support of the social department
- Ensures appropriate management of information collected and produces the respective reports and statistics
- Support the department in developing awareness internally and externally on specific social topics.
- Helps organize meetings; advises other staff members about his/her field of activities.
- Organizes and participates in workshops/training related to access to services for vulnerable groups, inclusion for people with disabilities, integration into the community for victims of violence, and other relevant subjects.
Position Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
Years of experience required: 1 – 2 years’ work experience in social work.
Level of education: Bachelor’s degree.
Field of education: Social Work.
Languages: Fluency in Arabic and English.
Training/Certification: Case management in Child Protection and GBV

Job Details:
Job Location: Rafic Hariri University Hospital, Beirut.
Working Schedule: Monday till Friday, from 8:00am till 4:30pm (including 30mn lunch break).
Contract Type: Fixed Term 1 year (renewable based on performance and need for the position).
Salary Package: // 1’570- 2’025 // USD
